ARCHITECTURE:

This 2-storey Edwardian Foursquare has an offset 2-storey front extension, and front facing steps. The roof is shallow and hipped, and the upper storey of the porch was probably originally open. Prominent dressed granite pillars support three square wooden posts with moulded tops under a dentil cornice. The soffits are finished in tongue-and-groove and have modillions all around. Upper storey windows are replacements. On the main level to the right there are multi-pane over single-pane sashes in a tripartite grouping. To the left of the entrance door are smaller multi-pane leaded windows. The original front door has a single light. The exterior finish is stucco with a trowelled finish and simple half-timbering. A flat-roofed extension on the north side has modern detail and is attached to an original 2-storey gabled extension. The sloping site shows a rock outcropping at the front which is augmented by a mortared stone retaining wall and terminated by a pair of cut granite gate posts.

ORIGINAL OCCUPANTS:

The house was built for Anor Lyman (c.1868-1920) and Sarah (Porter, 1873-1927) Matthews, newly arrived from Ontario. Anor was involved in real estate.

OTHER OCCUPANTS:

By 1917 the Cartwright family was living here. Joseph (1874-1951) and Ida (Lee, 1874-1943) Cartwright lived here with their son George Thomas until the early 1920s. Joseph was born in Walsall, England, and Ida in Newcastle. They came to BC c.1900 and to Victoria in 1910. Joseph was a machinist with the CPR, and son George was an electrician. George married Jessie Isabel Dorman in Victoria in 1924.

From the late 1920s, Milton S. Trimble lived here. Following a brief period of vacancy, Vivian Maillard (1884-1966) and Marion Lillian (Ward, 1891-1951) Gallon lived here from 1933 until about 1940. Born in Colorado City, TX, Vivian came to BC in 1910. He was a provincial civil servant, but later worked for the federal government as an accountant. He and Marion married in Vancouver in 1919. He retired in 1959 and they returned to Vancouver.

Miss Caroline E. Rowett lived here c.1941-43. Longshoreman Frank Barclay and his wife Ellen were here in 1946. Thomas H. and Evelyn Tremblay bought the house by 1949, but only lived in it for a year or two, as the house was vacant in 1951. Thomas was a forester.

W.O. Hensten converted the house into a duplex c.1952.
